Lord Oakeshott resigns

Editor’s reaction

9th FEBRUARY 2011

Responding to news of the resignation of the Lib Dem Treasury spokesman in the Lords, the editor of The Liberal magazine said: “Lord Oakeshott has been punished for expressing an honest assessment of this farcical settlement. His resignation by mutual consent proves that there is no place for the liberal conscience in this coalition”.

Benjamin Ramm noted that Oakeshott had only been articulating present Lib Dem policy – a promise to tackle ‘casino banking’, and to create a ‘safe’ and ‘balanced’ investment environment that ensures banks work on behalf of citizens, rather than the other way round. This approach was given voice by Vince Cable in a bold keynote speech at last year’s autumn party conference.
